Understanding digital consumers, communities and influencers

Did you know that there are over 100 social media sites in 2021? Can you believe that?

Some of them which are; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Vlive.

Sometimes, we as individuals underestimate the power of social media. We have so much freedom on the internet. By that I mean – following other individuals we like on the internet, watching shows, listening to music, online shopping to posting our thoughts on our social media.

And also because we sometimes forget the thought of how one action can lead to something. We tend to do things without a second thought.

Below are some examples of how celebrities have caused items to be sold out in an instant.

  1. BTS member Jungkook – Downy laundry detergent

Story beings where BTS member, Jungkook, went onto Vlive to talk to his fans. When asked about what his favourite fabric softener, he replied without thinking too much. Lo and behold, Jungkook caused a two-months worth of Downy’s Adorable to be sold out in a single day! Since then, he is known as a “laundry fairy”.

2. EXO member Xiumin – Derma Lift Intensiderm Series + Silcot Uruuru Cotton Pads + Dr. Jart Soothing Hydra Solution

Over here, EXO member Xiumin was featured on MBC television “It’s Dangerous Beyond the Blankets” in September 2017. There was a scene where Xiumin took out some skincare products to use. Once again, in an instant, the products that Xiumin used sold out instantly in Korea. Those items were known as “Xiumin-tem” because he has been using them throughout the year. At first, some were suspicious as to whether it was sponsored but when he came onto the program in June 2018, he was seen using the same skincare products.

With that being said, marketers can use celebrities to promote their services and products. Businesses and brands can choose to send their items to celebrities and if the celebrities like their products, the celebrities will naturally promote the products for them.

  1. Hello, May! You’ve produced an interesting article. Aside from commercial endorsements, I never anticipated how powerful celebrities’ words or deeds might be in influencing businesses. As a result, I began to question if the K-Pop community could unite together to support the recent Stop Asian Hate movement. Would it have the same clout as the Black Lives Matter movement?

    1. Thank you for the feedback. Most definitely, K-pop idols have a huge fanbase and would be awesome to help gain awareness on “Stop Asian Hate”. However, those idol’s agency might not let them do it as they want to protect their idols from being in “scandalous” articles.

  2. Hi May! After reading your blog, I’ve learnt that celebrities actually have lots of influencing power in advertising products. However, if a celebrity that is currently advertising a product happens to be involved in a scandal would the product’s company receive damages?

    1. Hi there! Thank you for your time! To your question, it goes both way, if the product is genuinely a good product to use, it shouldn’t be affected badly just because of the celebrity endorsing it. But if the product is hard to use or has no benefits to the user, the company will definitely receive backlash.

  3. Hi may,

great sharing you have there! i like how you incorporate celebrities like Xiumin from EXO & Jung Kook from BTS to explain the relationship of influencer marketing to the community. Indeed having a celebrity or influencers with high number of followers & fans does help to bring in more attention towards a product and i believe it will definitely help to boost sales too.

However, i feel that maybe not all the products celebrities or influencers promote to the public is 100% as recommended, just that they are paid and therefore have to make good reviews about it. What do you think about it?

    1. To your question, yes I do agree with you to a certain extent. Some products might not be as good as the influencers claim it to be since it is ultimately a sponsorship/paid advertisement. But because it is their job and they are getting paid, they have to promote the product even if there are disadvantages. However, there are products that celebrities and influencers truly love and swear by. It does depend on whether the influencer is willing to show the products they use on a daily basis or not.
